Headaches!
- A headache is one of the most commonly experienced of all physical discomforts. According to the W.H.O., about half of all adults have a headache in a given year.
- Headaches will be classified as primary if they are not caused by underlying disease or structural problems, and are often thought of as benign, recurrent headaches by medical professionals. Patients who are living with them can seldom afford to consider them benign though!
- The most common type of headache is the tension-type headache, which affect 1.6 billion people worldwide (about 22% of the population). Migraine headaches affect almost 12% of the population which is about 848 million people. Both tension-type and migraine headaches are considered primary types.
- Almost all conventional medical treatments for headache focus only on relief from the pain, with very little ability to prevent recurrence. This emphasis does very little to improve the recurrent headache sufferer’s life though!
- In addition, the International Headache Society classifies around 150 other types of headaches, many of which occur secondary to other conditions such as trigeminal neuralgia, dehydration, sinusitis, eye strain or neck pain.
